History of AOSR

Find out about the founding of this federation of societies in Asia Oceania and its progress over half a century.

The Beginnings in Brief

In the 1960s, there was a growing awareness of the need to develop closer ties between radiologists in the various nations of Asia and Oceania.

In the late 1960s, the idea of setting up an Asian Oceanian society was mooted. Several names were considered including Asiatic, Asia Pacific and Asia Oceania. A questionnaire was sent to 13 constituent nations/territories and the consensus was to start a society. This was the preparation for the first meeting, held in Hotel Otani in Tokyo, during the International Congress of Radiology (ICR) 1969. This was also the first time, the ICR was held in Asia. It provided the opportunity to discuss the formation of the AOSR. This meeting was hosted by the Japanese delegation and was attended by 12 nations/territories. The founding president of the AOSR was Professor Emeritus William S.C. Hare.
1960s

Growing awareness to foster better ties between radiologists in Asia and Oceania.

1969

General consensus to start a society. The 1st meeting was held in Tokyo at the ICR1969.

1971

The 2nd meeting of the AOSR was held in Melbourne during the 1st Asian Oceanian Congress of Radiology (AOCR). Prof William Hare was the founding AOSR president. 

1971

The AOSR statutes  was formulated with the proposed draft later circulated for feedback.

1975

2nd AOCR was in Manila. Then president Federico Principe donated the AOSR President's Chain of Office.

1987

A new AOSR President's Chain of Office was donated by the Korean Society of Radiology (under leadership of Man Chung Han) after the original chain was lost.

1995

After the 7th AOCR in 1995, the AOCR  was held every 3 years instead of every 4 years. The Asian Oceanian Journal of Radiology was initiated. 

2001

Dr Lilian Leong from Hong Kong College of Radiologists was the first female AOSR president & the AOSR is registered as a society in Singapore.

2005

The first permanent secretariat was set up in Australia.

2006

The Asian Oceanian Journal of Radiology was stopped because of lack of funding.

2008

The AOCRs were held every 2 yearly from 2008.

2010

The AOSR permanent secretariat moved to Seoul, where it resides to date.

2012

The Asian Oceanian School of Radiology (AOSOR) was conceived and established.

2017

Proposal for setting up ASIASAFE was received.

2020

SARS-COV2 Pandemic resulted in postpontment of the 2020 AOCR Kuala Lumpur resulting in 2 AOCRs in 2021.

2021

AOCRs are now an annual event. The 18th AOCR Yokohama (April) was the first hybrid congress. The 19th AOCR (July) was a fully virtual congress, postponed from 2020. ASIASAFE was officially launched.
